Lost Battalion - Vosges Mountain scenario - October 1944

Scenario?

Postby barcelonablom on Sat Jul 26, 2008 2:15 am

Poking through the net sources and a few book sources (one of which Tim kindly lent me) I think I have an idea of what we can do for the scenario. Obviously its the Vosges and certainly the rescue of the "Lost Battalion" of the Alamo Regiment.

Now if we had the people and such it would be cool to actually make this something interesting. I want to plan the 442's assault on Banzai Hill. It was one of the heaviest engagements the RCT had been in and was certainly a key moment in the battle to turn German units aside to breakthrough to the Lost Battalion. Essentially the 133rd side can play the Lost Battalion of the Alamo Regiment and the 442d + other allied units can be the assault force. Now this hinges on enough Germans to make it feasible. Of course if there aren't enough we shoot from the hip and probably end up doing the same-ol same-ol football field style battle. (Our side, their side, one of us attacking)

Correct me if I'm wrong, these photos are from the battle and I'm sure those are M43s?

The way I would see it, is one group of Amercian Soliders are set-up in a stationary position (good opportunity for the 30 Cals). The group is surrounded by the Germans. The rest of the American soldiers which are mobile, attempt to break through the German positions, and get to the "lost battalion". The Question of course is what happens once you reach the trapped soliders?

The same that happened then. The GI CO needs to be smart enough to do a breach and withdrawl smartly. Essentially tear a piece of paper in the middle and fold the edges apart from each other. These "wings" should be the flank watch units, even if its just one rifleman... its enough to get word of what the enemy would be up to. When they manage to break through to the unit then the goal would most likely be to move back to the starting line without getting trapped or cut off again. Fold the pieces of paper back and that is the "wings" coming back with the main force as it withdraws.

But as much as I want something cool and different I doubt we'll have enough people to do it with.
