This one is missing the leather strap, but that is easy enough to replace.

If it's swivel bale, doesn't that mean it's only good for late war?

I'll wait for others to speak but, the objective is to get guys out on the field with "the best they can afford". With the best and most accurate equipment. If the helmet is 95% accurate except for the bale, it isn't the end of the world. It's an exception made for those wanting to get into reenacting on a budget.

This is what Tim Kano said at one of our recent meetings

Tim then highlighted the unit’s viewpoint and guideline on Authenticity. In many units authenticity can become a big issue; what you wear and when you wear it. We have, and will have many new members, and due to budgets and time constraints they can’t always be fully fitted with all the perfect items. Some people start with good items and work up to the best items, but forget about those days when their equipment wasn’t picture perfect. So while it is great to have a front seam helmet, it isn’t a problem for someone to have a rear seam helmet, just that they know it isn’t period correct

It's nice to have a fixed bale helmet. It's the prefered one to have. But, that being said swivel bale front seam helmets are acceptable. Many fixed bale helmets were converted to swivel bale helmets if a bale broke. Frome 3 feet away, it difficult to tell the difference between the two. I have one of each myself. Rear seam helmets are acceptable for the short term and as a loaner for new guys. If you already had a rear seam helmet, it could delay your purchase while you gather other gear and uniforms. Your impression should be ever evolving to get better. Eventually, you must obtain the front seam helmet fixed or swivel bale.
When all else fails, Attack!
