442nd Nisei Veterans go back to Europe

Postby davep on Tue Jun 17, 2008 5:42 pm

Final trip of the 442nd Nisei veterans retracing their liberating route of WW II, starting in Florence-Italy and ending in Paris-France. This site has over 250 picture of their trip, with some grave markers. If you click the picture and then click "all size" you can see the picture in it's original size. It looks like the tour guide are dressed in WWII gear.

At lot of the picture are senic pictures, but there are some gems

Very neat. Glad the internet is making these pilgrimages known to the world. Notice the Charms in that picture you posted. Military members still hold a regarded mystique about that candy.

Very interesting, Rich, I thought it was some little kid's offering. What is the background to the use of candy?

Yeah Tim, there's a few that send those emphatic shivers down my spine.

Dave: Yeah. Its weird. I believe back in the day they considered them kinda like good luck. Everyone liked them of course. I mean they are practically flavored hard candy. Nowadays I remember in MCT on a hump one of our Sergeants told us that eating Charms on a hump means that it will get stormy soon. Of course it didn't happen but it is one of the old "Charms Legends" I read about in Leatherneck Magazine later. I can't remember the rest other than the ironic "good luck Charms" type of deal. I'll try and dig that article up for you.
