It's HERE, it's green and it's beautiful!

My jeep showed up at Fernie's house and he has already done a visual inspection of it. I ought to be rolling up there later tonight and checking it out myself.

I think I'll name her Jean Francis after mom. Or just Jean. I'm sure my dad would have if he had the chance.

Tim if you can find me a nice cursive font, I can do up a stencil with it at work and with some white spraypaint we can make Jean official :D

Yup I can see some typical military stencils there. But I think a quick thinking soldier probably also cut pieces of cardstock or something hard yet able to be cut on hand to make the fancy cursive names we see...

If you can fine more I'd appreciate it.

Tim if you want just give me the letter dimensions and a font you want and I can make it happen easy.

I love this idea. I would prefer a cursive font as well. I've seen a few jeeps with cursive font names before.

The picture of "Lindsay" looks like a gas .50 mounted on it! Interesting, if it is it appears they hid the gas lines with a cloth sleeve. I may do that.

I took a look at her last night. Jean is a beautiful thing. I counted off about a dozen things wrong with her cosmetically. Nothing serious that can't be fixed with parts, a screwdriver and a wrench. Mechanical stuff is Fernie's job, but she runs like a top. Now it's just a logistics thing.

As she is she is pretty much ready to hit the field for active duty. Now if my MG mounts would just show up.

Preparing the jeep, trials and tribulations.

Postby kanowarrior on Thu Jun 26, 2008 12:28 pm

So I go to the DMV yesterday after work and paid for registration. They still want to see the jeep and I discovered that DMV people are either really cool or total morons. The information guy really raised his eyebrow when I told him it was 63 years old and he quickly surmized it was a 1945 jeep and really cool. The DMV lady kept trying to tell me it was a pick up truck so she could squeeze a few more dollars out of me for a commerical vehicle. I kept telling her it was a jeep, no tailgate, no bed. It's a friggin CAR... not a truck!

I am trying to have it ready by the 4th of July parade. Everything is in working order except the tail lights and Fernie is working on those now.

Real problem here is the VIN number. Of course the DMV wants to match up the VIN number with the title. Fortunately the VIN number plate is attached to the keyring but we have to secure that to the vehicle now. As with most jeeps that have been restored and reconditioned many times thru it's life, the frame and motor VIN numbers don't match and the glove box data plates are long gone. No license plates either but since the vehicle is from out of state that won't matter.

I also decided against Historical Vehicle license plates because the savings wasn't that great and they limit you on where you drive and how much. Plus you aren't allowed to tow anything. To much hassel for a few dollars.

Yesterday I called on the long lost machine gun pedestal and dash mount. Seems they were holding the entire order up for one part that was on back order. I already have that part so I told them to get it shipped now. Should be here middle of next week. Wait! Fourth of July is the middle of next week! Hmmm... guess those won't show up for another two weeks!

Still picking up loose parts here and there to replace little things the guy didn't put on to finish the restoration. Jean starts like a champ. She is one hellva jeep. The guy that restored it was a gorilla though and broke a few bolt heads here and there. All he did was rebolt stuff in a different place and left the broken bolts alone or didn't bother replacing the parts if the bolt was broken. Still not a bad thing. Helps to have an excellent mechanic like Fernie around!

Well guys... our motor pool just grew by one. Yep. I did the unthinkable and bought another jeep tonight. Should be here in a couple weeks if all goes smooth, but this one will need some restoration work. It's pretty amazingly complete actually but will need a work over, not a turnkey jeep like my other one.

So let's see now...
Russ's Jeep
Tom's Jeep
Levine family jeep
My two jeeps....

Yep... that's FIVE! Yikes. I'm out of control.

I haven't seen an unrestored jeep this complete in a very, very long time.

Cripes. The only issue is getting the right stuff. From my experience, spray is the way to go when painting a base coat. It looks factory and even if the Motor Pool had to repaint them in the field it was probably with a gun and compressor. Now the guys out the field probably would apply with whatever methods they had barring if they could find paint.

Now its urethane. I usually work in two part poly for aircraft. They probably made it urethane to make it a bit more safe for you to use. If I can get a hold of a compressor and spray gun and you want to paint this beastie, I'll gladly do it so it looks awesome, or we can do whatever with what we have. And honestly even the catalyzed paint isn't that expensive (compared to the poly's I use that are about 1xx something a two-part pint kit). And the spray paint would be excellent for light touch ups on any of the jeeps. Color probably won't match though, but even if it was the same paint producer and shades, the fact that the paint would be sun-faded and dirty will change the color enough to notice a touch-up spot.
