V Mail

Postby davep on Mon Sep 24, 2007 10:56 pm

I've been doing some research on V-Mail. I found out it was invented by the government to reduce the amount space and weight mail took. While it was recommended, it was not mandatory.

While the person writing their letter, did so on a nice regular size piece of paper. What the person on the receiving end got was a black and white, xerox-like photo copy on small thin paper. These were only 4.5 x 5 in size.

One bag of V-Mail was equivalent as 37 bags of regular mail and comprised 150,000 letters. This reduced the weight from 2,575 lbs down to just 45 lbs.

Here is a blank form I made up ( to make a "recieved copy" )

Here is the same form, which together with a "handwriting font", I made my own V-Mail. Actually anyone can give me a short letter, and I can copy and paste it into their very own V-Mail. I reduce the size a little; but it would have actually been smaller. Please read it :D

We used to use real Vmail forms. They were red on white paper and came in pads. I remember guys tearing out sheets and giving them to everyone to use. I think I still have one somewhere.

The Red & White forms are what the writer used. Unfortunately these are all taken and photograph on microfilm, flown overseas, and then reprinted on small, thin paper for the GI to read. On the other hand the GI could use them to write letters outbound mail home. But if a GI got a V-Mail it would look like the example I put up.

By using the blank, plus by downloading a "writing font" you can make your own V-Mails

Here are some free ones, there is handwritting and printing
