Looks like something from the civilian sector or maybe from a mess kitchen. Either way, this the first tip off it's probably bogus.

I WAS TOLD THIS IS AN OLD MILITARY , POSSIBLY WW2

I can't tell you how many auctions I've seen put up by some bozo trying to milk big bucks out some poor unsuspecting buyer.

I think it's just a civilian lunch pail. no doubt it's old, but I can't exactly place when it's from.
