Recent update - Spetember 27, 2008 today

Billy Tucci had a surprise for us fans in attendance at Baltimore Comic Con this rainy Saturday afternoon. To help him discuss his new book, “Sgt. Rock - The Lost Battalion,” he was joined by two veterans of the 442nd regimental combat team and a third Japanese American who had served in the Pacific. “Let me introduce you,” he said, “to these brave men who saved the world.”

Tucci Announces “Sgt. Rock’s Tour Of Heroes”

For Immediate Release --

Bayport, NY - As he’s already done in San Diego, Las Vegas and Baltimore, writer/artist Billy Tucci will be making several personal appearances to coincide with the launch of “Sgt. Rock – The Lost Battalion” and as he’s done before he’ll be bringing along some very special guests – World War Two Veterans and the stars of “Sgt. Rock’s Tour of Heroes.”

DC Comics’ “The Lost Battalion” is based on the events of October 1944, where 275 men of the 141st Infantry were trapped and surrounded by thousands of German troops bent on their complete annihilation. For six days and nights, the Texans supplied only by P47 fighter/bombers, fought one of the most brutal last stands in history and their ultimate rescue by the embattled Japanese Americans of the 442nd RCT is unequalled in casualties and valor.

Tucci is especially honored to have befriended so many 442nd veterans who’s unit stands among the most decorated in U.S. Army history, “the sacrifice of these men, who were all volunteers is just staggering, especially when you think that so many died for another’s freedom while their own families were incarcerated behind barbed wire here in the United States.”

Tucci’s referring to the heinous incarceration of over 100,000 Japanese Americans during the Second World War in FDR’s “interment camps” – rounded up with no hearings or trial, their only crime being that of their heritage.

“My ultimate goal, above and beyond any sort of sales or personal recognition is that in the future, when a fan reads a book or sees a film or documentary on the 141st, the 442nd or the 405th Fighter Squadron they can then turn to their children and say, “I met one of those great men once.”

On the “Tour of Heroes” all the veterans will share their wartime and post war experiences with the fans and sign free “Sgt. Rock” prints graciously produced by DC. Tucci concluded “meeting these men has been the greatest honor of my life and hopefully this Tour will serve as a fitting tribute to these humble heroes, who in sacrificing so much of themselves for freedom, ended up saving the world. We really need to let them know how appreciated and loved they truly are.”

Cards, Comics and Collectibles Marc Nathan added that “this is an incredibly rare opportunity to share a special day with these heroes and a learn an amazing lesson in history by those who lived it.”

“Sgt. Rock – The Lost Battalion Day One” will make its debut next Wednesday, November 5th and it will be celebrated with a launch party at “A Comic Shop” in Winter Park, Florida. Then Tucci will head to Wizard World Texas and be joined by Special Guest of Honor LTC Eliel “Arch” Archilla of the 405th fighter squadron, On November 12th he will appear at Cards, Comics & Collectables in Reisterstown, MD and be joined by 442nd RCT veterans Kelly Kuwayama, Terry Shima and Merrill’s Marauder’s Grant Hirabayashi. On December 6th Tucci will be joined by 442nd veterans Kenneth Inada and Arthur Nishimoto at Premier Comics, in Las Vegas. December 12th and 13th will find the cartoonist accompanied by 442nd veteran Virgil Nishimura Westdale, author Mark Bando and tentatively 101st Airborne veteran Donald Burgett, at Wonderworld Comics in Taylor, Michigan. At this year’s New York National Con, (November 14-16th) Tucci will be sitting next to Russ Heath and be joined by World War 2 reenactors and their display of authentic uniform and equipment. More veterans will be joining future appearances and their names and dates will be announced soon.

Dunno I was thinking of ordering from Amazon or some such. Or maybe find the local comic book stores and see if they will be carrying this. If I can get them locally I'll gladly pick up copies for those that want them.

I went to ComicCon in San Diego this year and I passed by one booth that had a picture of a trio of WWII Soldiers in pencil and a guy drawing another one. I checked out some of the pictures he had and realized he was redo-ing Sgt. Rock. So, I introduced myself to Billy Tucci and let him know about our hobby. Well, of course, he was well aware of it and we immediately got to chatting. He told me about his trip to the Vosges and showed me pictures that he took. Then he allowed me to view his portfolio of the artwork he had accomplished to that date on the new Sgt. Rock comic. I was floored. He not only drew the Sgt. Rock as we remember him but was very meticulous on the very details of authenticity. He has done his research! What I saw at that time was the beach landing, but the trio of soldiers (the medic with the 34th adn 36th ID soldiers) was there and he told me his plans for a story on the Lost Battalion. I then proceeded to tell him about you guys. That's when he told me about the dinner he had with several Japanese-American vets and boy was I sure jealous that I had missed out on meeting them!

I'm looking forward to getting my comics and see where he takes it because I trust he's going to do a great job! I invited him out to any of our reenactments and events if he ever makes it out this way again.

I did find it at the comic store by Patsy's... totally worth the 3 bucks... Its a good read... Its a setup issue mainly. We're introduced to the narrator (a sketch artist correspondent), and naturally Sgt Rock and his men, as well as the men of the 442. D-day takes up about 3/4 of the issue and then we're launched to the Vosges before the Lost Battalion moves out. I've read it multiple times and find myself marvelling at the attention to detail Billy has put into it. I can't wait for the next one!

I got the first and second issue today. I got the last copy of the second issue, and one of the last two copies of the first. I sure would like to know who bought them up here were I live. I did see the "new" haunted tank comic, but it's looks like it's centered on a modern tanks

Oh and by the way the comic books are on the small side

Most comics are.. specially these days... a lot of the money is made through releasing the entire series in graphic novels. I see more graphic novels proliferate the shelves more then the comics. But getting the comics has always been part of collecting a series.

Reading this comic book, I', truly amazed at the artistry. The ability to maintain perspective and shape. I as a kid like to draw things, but was never go enough to sketch things that good of the fly. I try to play around with a pen and paper. I wish I could draw good-n-quick like these sketch artist can.
