Sgt. Rock

Postby davep on Fri Aug 24, 2007 7:00 pm

I was on the WWII reenactors forum, and found this post under the Topic "Need Soldiers for Sgt. Rock"

Hello All,
My name is Billy Tucci and I am a comic book writer/artist. I am currently bringing back the old DC comics character Sgt. Rock with filmmaker John Milius for a six issue miniseries. Our story arc focuses on the infamous "Lost Battalion" of October 1944 in the Vosges mountains and there rescue by the The Japanese/American "Nisei" soldiers of the 442nd RCT . In "The Lost Battalion," Rock and Easy Company will be among 275 men of 1st Battalion/141st "Alamo" Regiment trapped by 7000 German troops who held out against all odds for six days. John and I want this Sgt. Rock series to be like no other ever seen before. Very realistic and true to the actual events of the battle. Being Airborne myself, I am striving for true authenticity and was hoping some members could help me out if at all possible. The 78th ID in NJ have been extremely helpful and they'll be helping me out. I'd like to take pictures of the soldiers in actual kit and weapons, so that even those who served in WW2 would appreciate my attempt at authenticity. I'd also need some German, specifically the Gebirgjagers mountain troops, so if you know where to direct me for that, I'd appreciate it as well. If you need to check on my work, please go to out my website below. Again, thanks for your time and again, any help would be greatly appreciated. I will also bring attention (if you'd like) to any and all units in my column, "Hellion For Hire" on the website http://www.newsarama.com. I live on Long Island, NY so if anyf you guys are interested, could meet you at your drill grounds or an appereance site. I've also contacted a several other websites for their assistance as well.
With much respect,
Billy Tucci

So I decided to go to ebay and pickup a few copies. There a few postings where you can get a lot of 10 or 15 copies for 20 bucks. Also they have resurrected the movie project as well.

Yeah there is some cool stuff. There are some things I might scan, then upload some pictures. I'll looking for the modern version that Billy Tucci, the guy on the wwiireenactor forum talked about. Also the movie when it finally comes out.

Here is some of his artwork.

Pictures are just too big for the forum

Also Tim should find this interesting, Billy posted this in the ww2reenactor's forum

We'll also be doing a companion cover featuring the Nisei soldiers of the 100th/442nd. All the soldiers will be put together (ala Band of Brothers) for the collected edition.

From Billy himself:

April 23, 2008

For Immediate Release:

France Awards Tucci Ambassadorship

Over the past decade, “Sergeant Rock – The Lost Battalion” writer/artist Billy Tucci has quietly garnered an impressive collection of personal and professional achievements. From award-winning comic book creator and publisher, to screenwriter and Independent filmmaker, now, Billy can lay claim to his most honored and important title -- Ambassador.

On March 4th, 2008 Monsieur Michel Langloix, Vice-President du Conseil General des Vosges bestowed the honor of Ambassador to William Tucci in the ancient town of Bruyeres. The citation reads, “William Tucci, Ambassadeur, De La Region De Bruyeres, Vosges, France.”

Amid a driving snowstorm, many provincial VIPs from the mountainous region of Lorraine gathered alongside Billy at the 100th/442nd Regimental Combat Team monument for a somber wreath laying ceremony, honoring the US Soldiers who liberated the town from their German occupiers. The ceremony, which included several regional mayors, vice presidents, councilors, resistance fighters and historians opened with a moving speech by Monsieur Kronel, mayor of la Houssiére, and was followed by a wreath laying and the simultaneous raising of the French tri-color and Stars and Stripes.

The 100th/442nd RCT was made up of Japanese/American “Nisei” soldiers – volunteers who chose to fight against tyranny and oppression overseas while many of their own family members were interned behind barbed wire in Franklin D. Roosevelt’s internment camps. It had achieved a 400 % casualty rate and is one, if not the most decorated unit in US military history.

Billy was locked deeply into the research for his latest project, “The Lost Battalion,” when he contacted two Vosgien historians, Hervé Claudon and Gerome Villain. “Since this Sgt. Rock is based on an actual battle and the soldiers who suffered through it, I felt compelled to write and draw a story as accurate as possible.” Tucci stated, “Over the course of several months, Hervé and Gerome not only served as indispensable experts on the region, the battle, and the men themselves, but we became the best of friends as well. With this connection between our soldiers and their land, we’ve really bonded as brothers.”

So much so that when the creator of the hit independent series Shi decided to visit the Vosges region of France last month, the two historians opened their homes and literally treated him as family while they guided the American throughout the region and introduced him to several resistance fighters. “What stuck me was that these men, now in their seventies, where just mere boys at the time.” An emotional Billy revealed, “Boys who risked their lives guiding many Americans safely through the mountains and across rivers to attack the Germans, and now, here they were celebrating with me with all these photos and incredible stories. I couldn’t help but keep on hugging them!”

It seemed that Monsieur’s Claudon and Villain had many other surprises in store for the Yank as he followed in the footsteps of the 141st Infantry and 442nd RCT. He paid a visit to the Epinal American Cemetery and memorial situated at the foot of the Vosges Mountains overlooking the Moselle River. The cartoonist noted, “While the lion’s share of the Allied airpower, supplies, equipment and soldiers were sent into Germany through northern France, Belgium and Holland, this cemetery holds the remains of 5,255 American dead. And, though largely ignored and forgotten by the press and historians, it reveals the disproportionate brutality of the battles that raged in Eastern France and the heart of the Reich.”

But according to Billy, there are many who will never ignore or forget the sacrifice of those gallant soldiers -- the Vosgiens themselves. All along the way, he met with people and press, having conversations and doing interviews for several newspapers and even French National television – a link to his interview can be seen here:

Video William Tucci, dessinateur américain - Vosges - William, Tucci, dessinateur, vosges, 39-45 - Dailymotion Share Your Videos

But, aside from all the wonderful Vosgien food and drink, nothing will compare to the memorial ceremony on Billy’s last day. “I was stunned by this wonderful surprise – I couldn’t believe it. Here I was holding this beautiful wreath, representing the United States. I had asked Monsieur Langloix, ‘why me?’ I had nothing to do with the liberation. I don’t deserve this.” “But he simply smiled and sternly instructed me that not only were they appreciative of my work but that the ambassadorship means that I am to tell my countrymen that the people of France will never forget their liberators.”

It is a task that Billy takes to heart and promises to do justice to those heroes, as “Sgt. Rock – The Lost Battalion” holds a special place in my soul, just like the Vosges mountains. After all, because of this series and DC Comics, I have been bestowed with the greatest honor of my life.”

Billy was also gifted with a champagne celebration in Bruyeres Town Hall, and presented with a beautiful lamp proclaiming his Ambassadorship, engraved with images of the Vosges region and a soldier of the 100th/442nd RCT. But one last “coupe de grace” came as a surprise to everyone. From the city of Nancy came a telephone call from the war bride of a 36th Infantry soldier, David Rosenbluth, who had seen Billy on TV. “I wanted to meet him, but since I was leaving the next day, the only way possible would be at the Nancy train station, so here I was the next day, sitting in the train station with Mr. Rosenbluth and his beautiful wife. Again, I promised him that, as a former serviceman myself, I would do him and his fellow soldiers honor and tell their story.”

“Sgt. Rock – The Lost Battalion” is a monthly six-issue miniseries that will debut this November from DC Comics. Rock and Easy Company will be among the 275 men of the 141st Infantry who, cut off and surrounded on all sides must now fight off an enemy force ten times their size. The men of the 100th/442nd RCT, alongside several fictional though legendary DC heroes (Johnny Cloud, The Haunted Tank) will also play a pivotal role in the series.

Billy will be discuss his trip to the Vosges and Normandy in greater detail when his “Hellion For Hire – Tour of Duty” column restarts on NEWSARAMA.COM - Daily Comic Book News, Comics Previews, Reviews & Message Boards in May.

Hello All,
I just completed the final issue of “Sgt. Rock - The Lost Battalion.” It is Day Six and I had to cram seven issues (which I pleaded for) into six, but think I did it. I did add an extra page and hope DC will give me that, as it’s so important. I am greatly relieved and pretty damn proud of the work. I will finish the cover to Day 4 (they are all titled “ ay 1″, “ ay 2″ etc. as opposed to numbered issues — hope this doesn’t piss off any collectors) today, cover to Day 5 by Friday and Day 6 by Sunday.

Again, I’m really exciting, the ending is quite sad and it even brought tears to Deb’s eyes so hopefully, others will feel the same.

I got an email from a 442nd veteran today, and will contact him via email. I am so terrified that I’m SHAKING. I’m just glad I didn’t see it last night, or I wouldn’t have slept. I’ll be posting another Hellion up next week (I plan) titled, “covering Rock” but will post it here first.

Until tomorrow and I’ll post the cover when I complete it tonight.

MEGA-CON '08: BILLY TUCCI TALKS SGT. ROCK

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Report by Steve Ekstrom

Friday at MegaCon in Orlando, Florida, creator Billy Tucci hosted his first ever, non-Shi related panel — discussing his work on a future Sgt. Rock limited series from DC, Sgt. Rock: The Lost Battalion. Tucci’s work on this mini was originally announced last year at the Baltimore Comic-Con. The limited series will take place in October, 1944 in and around the Vosges Mountains in France during the historic rescue mission of a lost battalion including Sgt. Rock and Easy Company. The story opens at Omaha Beach on D-Day.
Only days after returning from Normandy, an emotional Tucci engaged an intimate audience with pictures and stories of his research of those areas. Also, he has participated in World War II reenactments—acting as a field reporter for both Allied and German forces. Tucci took over 1000 photos for reference material for his future project.

When asked about the inspiration involving this new project, Tucci said, “I was inclined to tell the story of the American dream—and how it is bigger than the government.” Not only does this story include the trials and tribulations of the Nazi-encircled ‘Lost Battalion’ but their rescuers as well. Tucci explained, “It gets a reader into a story to see fiction laid over history.”

It is common knowledge that Tucci himself is a retired member of the U.S. Army and the New York and Rhode Island National Guard. He added, “I love the opportunity to do justice to the American Armed Forces.”

During the panel, a number of fans personally thanked Tucci for his efforts to represent soldiers who, like their family, served during World War II. In response, Tucci said, “I want to move people,” and that he had no intentions of being preachy or one-sided in regards to the portrayal of American military heroism. When asked who he hoped his primary audience would be, Tucci stated, “I want this to be for the American people—so they can know both what Allied forces did and how thankful the people of France truly are.”

In his closing, he stated, “I hope that this book will make people thank at least one veteran.”

An announcement regarding the release date of Sgt. Rock: The Lost Battalion is still pending from DC Comics.

In the coming weeks, Steve will be talking with Billy Tucci about his experiences abroad as he researched for the upcoming Sgt. Rock project.

Yup! Billy is doing amazing work. He posted up his drafts of those pictures (in fact the same) those most certainly are not the finals. He still has to send them off to the inkers (the most time consuming he said. He can write and draw 10-12 pages a day IIRC, they can only ink 1-2 a day.) and then the letterers can do tons of pages a day. My picture of Pfc Isen in my sig here (which I use at WW2 Zone) inspired Billy to copy the pose for Rock's charge across the beach:

http://www.crusadefinearts.com/files/Sgt.%20Rock/RockLBpg.6.jpg

It was to me and his surprise that he didn't know that photo well or the story behind it. I'm glad to have helped him on a Sgt. Rock comic! Even if it was one panel...

I am very much liking the direction this new rock is taking...

Its awesome Billy is very passionate about this. He even spent ComiCon in San Diego in his part of the venue (would have loved to meet him) with two or three 442 vets, his own guests of honor.
